Je faisais la queue au supermarch\u00e9, mon fils de trois ans sur la hanche, esp\u00e9rant qu\u2019il ne glisse pas encore un paquet de bonbons dans le chariot pendant que je d\u00e9tourne les yeux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Devant nous se tenait une dame \u00e2g\u00e9e, sans doute proche des quatre-vingts ans. Petite, \u00e9l\u00e9gante, impeccablement coiff\u00e9e. Ses mains fines tremblaient l\u00e9g\u00e8rement en rangeant ses articles sur le tapis roulant : un pain, du lait, une soupe en conserve, un sac de pommes de terre\u2026 et une tarte aux pommes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rien d\u2019inutile. Rien d\u2019excessif. Juste de quoi tenir quelques jours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lorsque la caissi\u00e8re annon\u00e7a le montant, la vieille dame resta immobile. Elle fixa l\u2019\u00e9cran comme si les chiffres pouvaient s\u2019effacer par magie. Puis elle sortit sa carte et la passa dans le terminal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paiement refus\u00e9.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

La caissi\u00e8re r\u00e9essaya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Refus\u00e9 \u00e0 nouveau.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Un soupir agac\u00e9 s\u2019\u00e9leva derri\u00e8re moi. Quelqu\u2019un marmonna qu\u2019il \u00e9tait press\u00e9. La dame baissa la t\u00eate. Ses \u00e9paules sembl\u00e8rent se refermer sur elles-m\u00eames.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014 Je\u2026 je vais laisser la tarte, murmura-t-elle, la voix bris\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Je n\u2019ai pas r\u00e9fl\u00e9chi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014 Ce n\u2019est pas n\u00e9cessaire. Je vais payer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ma carte passa. Transaction accept\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le silence se fit. La dame se tourna vers moi, les yeux brillants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014 Ma ch\u00e8re\u2026 je vous rembourserai. Je vous le promets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014 Non, gardez-les, ai-je r\u00e9pondu doucement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mon fils lui fit un grand signe de la main.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elle quitta le magasin lentement, la t\u00eate encore basse, mais avec un l\u00e9ger sourire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Je ne me sentais pas h\u00e9ro\u00efque. Moi aussi, je comptais chaque euro. Mais je savais une chose : pr\u00e9server la dignit\u00e9 de quelqu\u2019un vaut parfois plus qu\u2019un ticket de caisse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deux jours plus tard<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Nous sommes revenus dans le m\u00eame magasin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c0 l\u2019entr\u00e9e, une table \u00e9tait install\u00e9e. Dessus, plusieurs sacs en papier remplis de produits alimentaires. Une pancarte indiquait :<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab Pour ceux qui en ont besoin aujourd\u2019hui. Servez-vous gratuitement. \u00bb<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Et \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 de la table se tenait la m\u00eame dame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mais elle n\u2019avait plus l\u2019air fragile. Elle rayonnait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quand elle m\u2019a vue, son visage s\u2019est illumin\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014 Je vous cherchais. Je ne pouvais pas vous rendre l\u2019argent comme promis. Alors j\u2019ai d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de faire autrement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elle m\u2019expliqua qu\u2019elle \u00e9tait une ancienne institutrice. Elle avait racont\u00e9 l\u2019incident \u00e0 quelques voisins et anciens \u00e9l\u00e8ves, sans mentionner mon nom. Elle leur avait simplement parl\u00e9 de la bont\u00e9 d\u2019une inconnue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les gens avaient r\u00e9pondu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Certains avaient apport\u00e9 des conserves. D\u2019autres avaient donn\u00e9 quelques billets. La direction du magasin avait accept\u00e9 d\u2019installer ce petit coin solidaire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014 Vous m\u2019avez rappel\u00e9 que la bont\u00e9 existe encore, dit-elle. Je voulais simplement la transmettre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Je sentis mes yeux se remplir de larmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ce que je pensais \u00eatre un petit geste presque invisible venait de d\u00e9clencher une cha\u00eene inattendue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les jours suivants, la table ne d\u00e9semplissait pas. Des clients d\u00e9posaient discr\u00e8tement un paquet de p\u00e2tes. D\u2019autres prenaient un sac en remerciant d\u2019un regard. L\u2019endroit autrefois rempli d\u2019impatience \u00e9tait devenu un espace de solidarit\u00e9 silencieuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mon fils fit \u00e0 nouveau un grand signe :<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Et j\u2019ai compris quelque chose d\u2019essentiel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peut-\u00eatre qu\u2019un jour, devenu adulte, mon fils fera la queue quelque part. Peut-\u00eatre qu\u2019il verra quelqu\u2019un h\u00e9siter devant un terminal de paiement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Et peut-\u00eatre qu\u2019il dira simplement :<\/p>\n\n\n\n
